Taiwanese-American artist, Jotham Hung’s hand-thrown ceramic sculptures are fueled by familiar forms and shapes, subverting traditional aspects of craft by intentional and unintentional degradation in his unorthodox process. He takes material waste, failures, mistakes, and reconstitutes them in a way that challenge notions of beauty and perfection.
Hung’s sculptures also allude to stories of his childhood, growing up in the immigrant-parent household. Holding on to nostalgia in the material realm, societal assimilation, the scarcity mindset, and perceived value within objects dictated by socio-economical and hierarchal structures. Themes of deconstruction and reconstruction, damage and repair are integrated into his work, expressing the connection between humans and art.
